Post Family "Holidays" & New Shutters

Over the last couple of days our family has had a few days that our special to us.  June 12 was the 4th anniversary of Faith Emma’s death.  Life with a 2 1/2 year old and 3 month old made it pretty difficult to stop and actually think about it, which is both sad and nice all at the same time.  It was nice because I didn’t have to be too sad all day.  That night after the girls went to bed, Randy and I lit a candle and said a little prayer for our daughter.  I caught myself watching Felicity playing and I thought to myself, if we hadn’t lost Faith than we wouldn’t have Felicity or Michaela.  And while that doesn’t make us miss her any less it does bring us a small amount of comfort.  Faith, we love you and miss you very, very much!!!

The other big day was of course Father’s Day.   We had a great day.  The girls gave Randy a book called “Cinderella, The Love of a Daddy and His Princess” and a framed plaque that talks about a daddy’s love.  We went to mass in the morning and after that we went to Lowe’s to let Randy pick out the present from me, a hedge trimmer!!  Then we wet to lunch to celebrate.  Once the girls went down for a nap we got to work on cleaning our office for our new shutters!IMG_6291

After almost 5 years of having no window coverings on her office window we decided to get some shutters on it.  We were going to use our “economic stimulus check” to pay for them, but thanks to some stupid rule, we aren’t getting it until the 27th (don’t get me started on that whole thing)!  Well, the shutters were installed today and they look fantastic!  Here are the before and after pictures.  The before picture is kind of bad because the window lets so much light into the office, but I think you can get the idea.

And finally the other big day in our house is today, June 16th.  Today is our 7th wedding anniversary!  We went to dinner to Oregano’s on Friday night and Grandma and Grandpa Post watched the girls.  We had a nice time just the two of us!  Tonight will be pretty low-key with the girls.  Happy Anniversary Randy!  I love you!!

New Photos – May 2008 and New Library

All smiles 2 I’m a little behind on posting the May photos. Sorry about that. Last month was a fun one with Michaela (see Becky’s previous Post). One of my favorite new things was seeing her cute smile! Now she’s even more expressive and she recognizes her Mom and Dad and of course her Big Sister. Other highlights of the month included Felicity’s first hair cut (just to even things up), Uncle Kenny’s 25th Birthday where Michaela finally got to meet her Papa Ellis and Uncle Louie, Mother’s Day and learning to roll over.

New Library Last weekend was a fun event on Saturday. The new Library by our house (Cortaro and Silverbell) had its grand opening. The Wheeler Taft Abbett Sr. (WTA) Pima County Library is build on a site that will eventually be part of a rather large Town of Marana park. It borders along the Santa Cruz river and the Architect did a fantastic job capitalizing on the great views of the surrounding mountains and the future views of the park. We know the girls are going to love going there for storytime and to check out books.

It was particularly special for me because my firm, NCS Consultants, was the geotechnical engineer on the project. It wasn’t the run of the mill project either. There were problem soils down to a depth of about 20-ft. We looked at several options to mitigate them, but it would have been too expensive to dig down to 20-ft. So we had them overexcavate 10-ft and used layers of what’s called geogrid in between the compacted soil layers. Even though most people will never appeciate what went in to making a safe and long-lasting building foundation, it gives me a great sense of accomplishment and pride to have helped put our new library on solid ground. I’ll probably post a description of the project and construction photos to our compan website sometime soon. Maybe I’ll post here when I do if anyone is interested in the engineering of the library.

Michaela Update

Michaela turned 3 months this past Friday (the 13th, guess it is not so unlucky, huh?).  She is getting so big now.  She is reaching for and sometimes grabbing toys that are within her reach, she likes to talk to us, she loves her play gym, she is smiling a lot and has started to recognize mommy and daddy and even Felicity when we walk into her eye sight.  But her big accomplishment to date is that she has learned to roll over.  She can roll over from her tummy to her back (not with a lot of frequency yet) and does it pretty well.  For a few days before she first did it, she was getting really close to rolling over from her back to her tummy.  In fact she was so close to doing it that we thought she would do it that way first.  But she surprised us one day but rolling over the other way.IMG_6267

Updated-Video Friday: How to make magic sand

[Updated 6/16/08] Sorry if the Google Video didn’t work. I replaced it with the Youtube one. [/Update]

This is really cool! I haven’t tried it yet, but I’ll give it a shot soon. I’m sure Felicity will love it! I wonder if you can add color somehow? Maybe putting food coloring in water and mixing the sand in before you put it in the oven to dry. If anyone else tries this, let me know.
