The collapse of the I-35W bridge in Minneapolis Minnesota back in August hit me surprisingly hard. The failure really had nothing to do with the foundations of the bridge and therefore the geotechnical engineering, but it was a failure by the engineering profession and it cost 13 people their lives.
On my other blog, I wrote about what I took from that failure and how it has stuck with me in my day-to-day practice. Some recent information from the NTSB and the FHWA that was in the news kind of rekindled the feelings I had from back in August as well as some new ones and prompted me to blog about them. It might give you a little bit of insight into how I approach my chosen profession and the responsibility I feel when working on a project with structures that people’s lives will depend on.
