Reflections on I-35 Bridge Collapse

The collapse of the I-35W bridge in Minneapolis Minnesota back in August hit me surprisingly hard. The failure really had nothing to do with the foundations of the bridge and therefore the geotechnical engineering, but it was a failure by the engineering profession and it cost 13 people their lives.

On my other blog, I wrote about what I took from that failure and how it has stuck with me in my day-to-day practice. Some recent information from the NTSB and the FHWA that was in the news kind of rekindled the feelings I had from back in August as well as some new ones and prompted me to blog about them. It might give you a little bit of insight into how I approach my chosen profession and the responsibility I feel when working on a project with structures that people’s lives will depend on.

Shampoo

Shampoo Finally Gone Before Felicity was born our family and friends were kind enough to throw a couple of baby showers. We received two bottles of baby shampoo. Well, a few days ago we FINALLY finished the second bottle! We keep waiting for her to sprout a little more hair, and its coming in slowly but surely.

We recently had a great find courtesy of Grandma Ellis – The “No Slippy Hair Clippy“. I was skeptical that they would work, but they do work as advertised. Every other barrett and hair clip we’ve tried falls out almost immediately because she just doesn’t have enough hair. But these seem to stay in for a long time. My only complaint is that they are a little pricey ($8/ea).

One goal for 2008

I haven’t really mentioned this before for fear of people actually holding me to it, but I have sort of a pseudo New Years resolution. I want to make 2008 the “Year of the Blog”. Not just for this blog, but I also have another blog-type site for geotechnical and geological engineers. I’m hoping to really push myself to become efficient at posting so that I can do it on a more regular basis. Not just to keep our family blog up to date with what’s going on, but also to just blog about whatever else might be happening in the world or particularly on the internet. Will anyone be interested? I guess we’ll find out. But as far as this blog goes, I’ll be creating different categories so that if people only want the family stuff, they can do that.

The New RnRPost.com Website

IMG_4863 Well, it was finally time. RandyPost.com has been around for years now and when Becky and I got married, we decided on a new domain name of RnRPost.com (Randall ‘n Rebecca Post…seems a little corny to me now but it sounded good at the time :) ). It’s only been about 6+ years since that happened and I’m finally launching the new and improved Becky and Randy Post Family website and blog!

I moved all of our blog posts over from Blogger and started using Flickr for the photo gallery. Be patient with me as Becky and I both get used to the new format. But I think the advantages of the Flickr route will be big, especially that our friends and family will be able to download high resolution versions of the photos. So you can browse the photos here on RnRPost.com or you can do it directly at our Flickr page. For those of you who don’t have an online photo gallery, I highly recommend Flickr. You’ll probably want the paid version, it’s a steal at only $25/year for unlimited storage of your photos.

November 2007 So poke around and enjoy. I’m almost caught up with the photo uploading that I’ve been neglecting for the past few months. I’ll let you know when I’m caught up. I hope to keep RandyPost.com around indefinitely because I don’t want to do anything with all of the old photos. So if you’re looking for photos from prior to around September or October of 2007, try there.
